Jane Grey By Nina Mason

Today we're celebrating the release of Jane Grey, an historical romance in the style of the classics by Nina Mason. Set in France’s Loire Valley in 1850, Jane Grey tells the story of a frustrated painter and a beleaguered English governess who comes to France to tutor a flirtatious young heiress in the social graces. Jane Grey meets Matthew Brontë when he takes a spill from his horse near where she is walking—the same way Jane Eyre met Mr. Rochester in the book our Jane is reading at the time. Jane finds it uncannier still that Matthew is a cousin to the author of Jane Eyre.

As the weeks pass, Jane and Matthew discover they have many shared interests. They seem perfect for each other apart from one significant snag: Matthew cannot marry without forfeiting his fortune, and Jane can only marry a man with the means to support her and her dependent relations back in England.

Will the strength of Jane and Matthew’s devotion be enough to overcome this seemingly unsolvable dilemma? Or will Jane be forced to choose her duty to her family over her own greatest desire?

Jane Grey is an original work with subtle shadings borrowed from Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre and Anne Brontë’s Agnes Grey.

Here’s the blurb:

Matthew Brontë, a true romantic at heart, believes the only happiness in life is to love and be loved. And yet, he fears he lacks the capacity to love…until he meets Jane Grey. Jane, a humble English governess, seems perfect for Matthew, apart from one significant snag: Jane can only marry a man of means and Matthew must give up his fortune if and when he marries.

When faced with the choice between love and money, which will each of them choose?

Here’s an excerpt:

“If you don’t mind my asking, was your relationship with the countess an affectionate one?”

“Hardly.”

Matthew’s candor pleased Jane on more than one level. “So, you didn’t love her?”

After an extended silence, he said, looking pained, “To be truthful, Miss Grey, I’ve never loved any woman—and often doubt myself capable of experiencing that most-coveted of emotions.”

His words crushed her hopes and brought more tears to her eyes. “Surely, you are wrong. For you strike me as a man of great passion.”

“I used to be.” His countenance grew even more sullen. “But now, my heart is like a tree in winter. Barren, leafless, and encrusted with ice.”

“Perhaps it will thaw when you meet the right woman,” she offered hopefully.

He brought his face very close to hers and, for a breathless moment, she thought he meant to kiss her. Instead, he said in a strained voice, “I probably should keep this to myself, but my cold heart has warmed some since making your acquaintance.”

For several hellish-yet-heavenly moments, they sat together in silence. His mouth was so close to hers she could feel his breath warming her lips. As her heart leapt toward him, her body impulsively followed. Their mouths met ever so sweetly. Then, mortified by her forwardness, she jerked back and turned away.

“Forgive me. I shouldn’t have been so presumptuous.”

“There’s nothing to forgive,” he said. “I rather liked the feel of your mouth on mine.”

She liked the feel of his, too—very much indeed—but carrying on like a common hussy would only lead to her ruin. “Perhaps we should return to the house and see if Cécile’s headache is any better.”

“Yes,” he said with audible strain. “Perhaps we should at that.”

He stood and offered her his arm. She took his coat sleeve between her gloved hands and let him lead her farther along the path. After they’d walked several paces, he said, “I don’t believe I’ve yet asked your favorite flower.”

“No, you haven’t.”

He waited a few moments before letting out a small laugh. “Will you not tell me what it is?”

“Very well.” She released a sigh. “I shall tell you. As queer as it may seem, my favorite flower is bleeding heart.”

He laughed, drew to a stop, and freed his arm from her grasp. Turning toward the bed to their right, he bent over the boxwood border and plucked several stems of the flower she’d named. Then, he offered the bouquet to her with a gallant bow. “Please allow me to offer you this humble token of my admiration.”

She accepted the flowers with joy in her heart. It was foolish, perhaps, to experience so much elation in response to so simple an offering, but no man had ever given her anything before. He’d also demonstrated tremendous compassion when she told him about her family—and had admitted to liking the brief intimacy they’d shared.

Might he have some feelings for her? Or was he just being kind? Oh—and what about his secret? She must take care not to let him turn her head, lest she end up brokenhearted when the truth came out.

Excerpt

Prologue
-
Axel

Metal security bars obscure my view, but don’t completely block out the wandering boy and his dog. Though I avert my gaze, I can still see him in my periphery—dirty bare feet, ragged blue jeans, and faded shirt. His hair is dingy from dirt, but it would probably be dark blond when washed. I have yet to see his eyes clearly but know for certain they are dark and sit slightly sunken while bluish circles surround the lost orbs.
Is he hungry today? Does his heroin addict of a mother know he feeds the mutt his mission food or is she too far gone to care anymore?
Helplessly drawn to the figure, my gaze slowly turns his way to see what’s new today. Like the times before, his is head down and his gait slow as he keeps to the shadows of the buildings. It’s as if he fears the sun’s rays. This nameless boy haunts me for days after I leave the dark confines of Barb’s cramped office, and I know with certainty, today will be no different. I’ll take the image of the homeless preteen with me when our meeting finally ends. I will attempt to approach him again today, offering money and shoes. He will again run from me.
Tinkling giggles pull me back to the business at hand.
“No, no that’s fine with me,” the girl says too eagerly.
The boy leads his shaggy dog down an alley and out of sight.
“Axel?”
Barb’s masculine voice makes my skin crawl, and I catch a glimpse of my reflection in the window. The image looks mean, cold and I know I’ve only grown harsher the past couple of years. Funny how being sober can actually make a person worse in some ways. A white hot pain licks up the side of my neck, creeping, crawling slowly to the center of my left eye where it sits and waits to split my skull open at just the right moment.
“We need you to sign,” Barb says to my back, not at all hiding her impatience.
Giving the alley one last glance, I turn to finish what will be my last contract this summer.
“Almost done, Candi,” Barb tells the girl I’ve spent the last month training with and I suddenly want to laugh.
Almost done?
Not by a long shot.
Yes, this signing is the end of the road with me, but Candi will undoubtedly be in films, lots of them, and she will never be done. This decision will follow her for the rest of her life.
That thought gives me pause and the conversation I tried to tune out of a moment ago becomes much clearer. Taking my seat at the cheap, round table, I ignore the producer, David Magardo, to my left, as well as Barb, the bane of my existence and business partner to my right, focusing straight ahead on Candi. Her bright blue eyes are made even brighter by whatever pill she popped this morning, self-tanning, and platinum blonde hair. Her double-D breasts are on display in her very short, low-cut dress.
The girl would be pretty if not for the heavy makeup and perky role she constantly played. I alone in this room know she’s never happy, sometimes drinks way too much, and cries when she calls home. She’s young—too young to know what she’s doing, yet old enough to choose it all. I’ve prepared her for everything and now, I let her go in peace.
“Did you stipulate you want a companion of your choice on set with you?”
Candi blinks quickly as if the thought escaped her.
“There will always be an assistant to see to her needs, Axel,” Magardo mumbles uncomfortably.
I give the girl a hard stare.
“What he means is his camera guy or his assistant,” I address Candi, ignoring Dave all together. “I told you to request this be added, otherwise you are their property and will be at the mercy of whoever is on set. At least with a companion, they can look out for you if something goes in a direction you are uncomfortable with.”
Like you land in a gangbang with total strangers when you were only expecting girl on girl.
Candi glances uncomfortably at Barb, then Dave.
“Uh, yeah. I need to have someone with me, a friend or someone,” she says uncertainly.
I tap the table absently with my forefinger, knowing all Candi wants is the sign-up money with the promise of more. Dave makes a note on the form and lets Barb, then Candi read it.
“This is less money than it was just a few minutes ago?” Candi says, surprised. “Why is it less?”
Her eyes dart from the pages to Dave, to me, then back to Dave.
“The cost involved in shooting changes if you want a companion with you while you film. The more terms you add and longer this takes, the less I’m willing to offer,” Dave threatens.
Candi’s eyes water ever so slightly and I know what’s coming. Even though I’m a hypocrite, and even though I was one of those strangers on film for countless girls over the course of my career, I fucking hate what she’s about to do.
“I don’t need anyone with me if you will honor the amount from before.”
“Agreed, now get Axel to sign and I can give you the check.”
When the pages are slid to me, I sign, releasing Candi to film at will. I inwardly grimace at the fact I’m most likely the only one in the room who would actually honor a contract. An equally sad and ironic thought, but now I can only eye the door, longing to escape these people and this life for a while.
The boat is ready. The alcohol is stocked, along with the food and my favorite fishing gear. All that’s missing is me.
I hate all of them, I hate all of this. Grinding my teeth, I fight the creeping darkness in my heart.
“Axel?” Barbs pulls me from my musings when the paperwork is complete.
I try to concentrate on the business at hand. Barbara can sense my foul mood and pats her short red hair nervously before smoothing imaginary lines on her black slacks. She attempts to look attractive and professional, and she succeeds to a cheapened degree, but I see her she-devil horns even if no one else does. And just behind her square reading glasses are the coldest, cruelest green eyes I’ve ever seen. Barb will never be more than a briefcase pimp trying to hold on to her youth to me. What was she now? Had to be close to fifty, maybe more. She was in her mid-thirties when I was a teenager just starting in the business.
The crow’s feet around her eyes deepen and my focus sharpens as I realize both she and Dave are staring at me.
“What?” I almost growl.
“We were just wondering if you would consider adding a couple of girls to your schedule. Maybe you could take one with you on your vacation and train her on the boat?”
The word “vacation” left her pencil thin lips like a curse word. Barbara hates me taking time off and fights me tooth and nail every chance she gets.
I understand what she said, the conniving bitch that she is.
“On the boat?”
A female, on a boat with me. That would mean she would have to share my bed and fuck no, that’s not happening. I don’t want anything to do with the girls other than training them, and that is plenty, thank you very much. The very thought of being confined in a small space with one makes my stomach clench with anxiety.
“Uh, no. Again, I have a set schedule, Barb. I’m not changing it. I’m finished working for now.”
I glance to Candi and she gives me a sad smile, knowing everyone is talking around her like she’s not in the room. Once her check was given to her, she was no longer of importance. I give her a narrowed expression, trying to convey the hard truth that, as of now, she’s nothing but a performance act.
Get used to it, sweetheart, it only get worse from here.

The constant need to be filled by Bodhi seemed to have eased after their last violent lovemaking session against the wall. Staring at herself in the mirror of her bathroom, Syn touched one of the marks on her hips, shivering at the remembered feel of his possession. Holy fucking shit, Lyric didn’t mention it would be so intense when she mated. The thought of her best friend had her looking for her cell. She glanced at the clock, and quickly walked back into bedroom staring at her recently re-made bed. Each step was a reminder of Bodhi’s possession as she felt a slight twinge between her thighs. With her shifter abilities, if she was to shift to her wolf, and then back to human, all her injuries would be healed, but she was loathe to do so. Gah, she was so screwed. She swiped across the screen and hit the button for Lyric. The ringtone her friend chose for herself, had her smiling as she waited. “Hello, beotch. How’s the mating going?” Lyric asked. Syn shook her head. “Oh, we’ve been fucking like bunnies, and then we fucked some more. Would you like all the down and dirty details?” The sound of Lyric groaning, and Rowan yelling at her to take the phone off of speaker made Syn blush and look around for Bodhi. “Dang it you hussy, why didn’t you tell me you weren’t alone?” Lyric’s laughing voice almost had Syn jumping into her truck, and racing over there to knock her best friend in the head. “Oh Goddess, you should have seen Rowan’s face. Now that, is what we call free entertainment.” Lyric laughed some more, then stopped as she must’ve realized Syn wasn’t laughing with her. “Oh, hun, I’m sorry. You know I didn’t mean to upset you. Hell, I tell you everything, even when Rowan’s right in the room. He sort of knows everything anyways. He’s like Super-SEAL, or would that be WolfieSEAL? Shit, what is he anyway now?” “Lyric, shut up. You’re gonna give me a headache. Rowan is…Rowan. Who is your mate? He’s an ex-SEAL but he’s also a shifter, so I guess he’s all that and a bag of chips. But, that doesn’t mean I want him privy to my sex life.” Lyric sniffed, and Syn had the impression her best friend was actually wiping away real tears. “Are you crying? You can’t cry. You’re the one who fucked up.” Syn gentled her voice. Lyric never cried. “Do I need to come over there? Did Super-Wolfeal do something?” “Wolfeal?” Lyric giggled. “Yeah, I sort of came up with that. You know how Jenna and Kellen call the Cordell twins Wolpires, well Wolfeals. What do you think?” “I’m totally gonna tell him his new nickname. Now, stop evading me, and spill. What did you and Bodhi talk about? I don’t need the dirty dirty, since I‘m a happily mated female, I kinda know what you do. Stick part A into slot A, B, or C.” Syn pulled the phone away from her ear. “So you’re saying you allow Rowan to stick his dick into your vajayjay, your mouth and your…” she was cut off as Lyric screeched. “Alright, that’s enough girl talk while I’m in residence, damn wolf hearing,” Rowan growled into the phone. “Give me the phone back you big bully.” “I’ll talk to you later, Lyric. Don’t let the big bad Wolfeal get the better of you. Offer up part C,” Syn said then hung up as Lyric squealed louder. “You, Karsyn Styles, are a bad girl.” Bodhi leaned against the doorjamb. He looked too damn good for her peace of mind, but she kept that to herself. Although the smirk on his face let her know he’d read her mind. His eyes, those green emerald fire ones, looked at her with such tenderness, making her sigh. “Well, you bring out the bad in me.” Straightening, he strolled into the room. “I hate to leave you so soon, but I need to go talk with my sister, and Kellen. There’s a lot of unfinished business with her husband, and his family. We know Roberto wasn’t in residence, which means he’s still a threat.” Fear skittered through her. “He knows where we are located.” “Let him come here,” he growled, pacing away from her to stare out the window. “I saw some of the things he did to her.” She didn’t need to ask who the her was. When they’d connected, and their mate link clicked into place, she’d seen his memories that he hadn’t blocked. She couldn’t imagine the hell Layla had endured, only hoped that Jenna could help ease some of it. “What’re you going to do?” Bodhi sighed. “I’m going to hunt his ass down, and kill him. His entire family will die, if not by my hands, then by our pack. Kellen has given me his blessing as well as his assurance he wants to dismember them all slowly. He said Jenna was too lenient when she collapsed the home with the fuckers inside. I tend to agree with him.” He smiled grimly. Syn remained silent. The need for vengeance was one she understood, but her gut told her it wasn’t going to be quite the easy task her mate thought. No, she didn’t doubt for a minute her mate was a badass, however, the man they were facing wasn’t an honorable man. She’d seen inside Layla’s memories, things she wondered if Bodhi had truly paid attention to, or if he’d been too disturbed to notice the little things. “Go ahead, say what’s on your mind. I can see you have an opinion, and while I may not agree, I do value your wisdom.” “It’s not my past to tell, but I suggest when you speak to your sister, you listen, and try not to freak the fuck out. She’s suffered enough without her brother going apeshit on her. Not that I think you’ll hurt her, but Layla is going to need you to stay calm while she tells you her tale.” Syn held up a finger. “If she opens up enough to tell you that is. If not, then when you look into her mind, really look.” “What aren’t you telling me? What did you see that I missed?” Bodhi came to stand in front of her, his hands holding her by the shoulders. “I’m telling you to keep your shit cool, and don’t be an ass.” If it was possible, he seemed to grow without shifting. Hell, his entire body appeared to vibrate. “I hate fucking riddles, and I most certainly don’t like it when my mate won’t just give me the deets I need so I’m not walking into a minefield.” Blunt, that was what Bodhi was. Syn shook her head. “As your mate, and Layla’s sister-in-law to be, I am giving you both my respect. What I saw through your mind, wasn’t a true vision of mine. It could be a distorted version, so back the fuck up off me.” Mate or not, her wolf came to the surface, ready to protect them. “The Dominguez family are, and were, vicious from what I saw. Hell, I was too young to really know anything, other than my friend Berto wasn’t able to play on certain days because he was in trouble. What did I miss?” He closed his eyes for a couple minutes, then they opened wide. “From what I saw through my sister’s mind, they not only killed, but they enjoyed it. The killing and torturing. Her husband made her watch. He got off on it. Shit, that’s what you were trying to tell me. I missed it when I connected with Layla.” He stared down at her, his heartbeat throbbed visibly though the vein in his neck. “Yeah, I’m sure there’s more.” She licked her lips.
